Veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett was signed to a one-year contract in Cleveland a year ago with the sole purpose of filling in until Deshaun Watson gets out of suspension. Having completed the requested work, Brissett has once again begun to go freelance and is soon attracting interest from both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Philadelphia Eagles, according to KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson.
The interest from the Buccaneers is pretty straightforward. Having just lost star quarterback Tom Brady to retirement, Tampa Bay has no clear plans in midfield in the future. With three-year backup Blaine Gabbert moving to free agency, the only passer left on the team’s roster is their second-round pick from 2021, Kyle Trask.
The Buccaneers certainly seem to like Trask, but with the 25-year-old appearing in only one game in limited playing time, he certainly doesn’t have the experience to give credit to the franchise’s midfield role. . Bringing in Brissett does two things for Tampa Bay: provide them with an experienced, capable back-up quarterback if the plan is to continue with Trask and/or provide them with an experienced starter, capable, who can get you through a transition year, like he did this year in Cleveland.
The Eagles’ interest in Brissett is even simpler. Philadelphia easily bolstered Jalen Hurts in their starting midfield. After a season that saw Hurts get the MVP vote, claim the All-Pro title for a second team and lead his team to the Super Bowl, there’s no doubt who will take the lead. Eagles attack next season.
In Philadelphia, Brissett would be just a backup. It was a role Brissett was familiar with. and perhaps a bit too standard, but it’s not unreasonable for the Eagles to approach a backup quarterback of his caliber. Situations like the ones we saw in San Francisco and Baltimore this year demonstrate how imperative it is to have a backup quarterback capable of winning football games.
In San Francisco, the 49ers have not one but two capable backups, who went on a 12-3 aggregate starting quarterback Trey Lance faltering after two weeks of play. Not only did they win the regular season, but they also entered the Conference Championship game at the hands of seventh-round rookie pick Brock Purdy. The Ravens, on the other hand, saw their two backups combine for a 2-3 record as they limped across the finish line 10-7 and were knocked out early in the playoffs. .
These two examples show exactly why the backup quarterback is one of the most important positions on the list. Injuries can happen and when they do, teams need to have a backup plan in place. The Eagles’ experienced backup, Gardner Minshew, is heading for free agency and the only other quarterback on the list is Ian Book, whose only NFL playing time has been disastrous in 2021. Brissett will easily offers an upgrade over Book and potentially an upgrade over Minshew.
Brissett has now enjoyed three successful seasons in a row, and while many may find it annoying that he’s seen as a backup or backup job, the jobs he’s being weighed against. Mention is testament to his recent form. He is pursued because of his experience as a starter and his ability to play well.
He may not hit $15 million a year starting out in Indianapolis, but Brissett should have an impressive deal that includes a variety of incentives that can be obtained if he lands the original job. Wherever Brissett ends up, he should be proud of his status as one of the league’s best reserve midfielders.
